Beaufort, South Carolina – The Beaufort community is mourning the loss of Purnell Whitehead, affectionately known as “Mr. Tootie,” a beloved and compassionate barber whose influence spanned more than three decades. Mr. Tootie served as the manager of the receiving building barbershop at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot on Parris Island, where his presence became a cornerstone of comfort and connection for countless recruits, Marines, and staff.
For over 30 years, Mr. Tootie was far more than a barber—he was a mentor, a friend, and a source of calm during some of the most challenging times in the lives of young recruits. His expert hands provided more than haircuts—they offered reassurance and a sense of familiarity in an environment often marked by discipline and transformation.
