Steve’s remarkable journey began at Stearns High School, where he graduated in 1968. As a senior, he astounded fans and opponents alike, averaging nearly 50 points per game and leading the Stearns Minutemen to a state championship title. His performance earned him a place at Acadia University, where he became a standout guard. In 1970, he led the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) league in scoring—an achievement made even more impressive in an era without the three-point line. The following year, he helped guide the Acadia Axemen to a national championship in 1971.
Beyond his playing career, Steve continued to serve the sport he loved. He was inducted into the Maine Basketball Hall of Fame in 2014 and later served on its Board of Directors, playing a key role in promoting and preserving the state’s basketball legacy. His colleagues at the Hall praised his tireless dedication and leadership, while tributes from platforms like Speaking of Sports honored him as a storyteller, friend, and advocate who brought joy to every room he entered.

As Maine and the broader basketball world reflect on his life, Steve Pound’s legacy endures—not only in records and championships but in the countless lives he inspired. His passion, integrity, and kindness will never be forgotten.
Rest in peace, Steve Pound. Your spirit lives on in every heart you touched.
